Jean-Jacques Henner’s family played a central role in his work. After the death
of his father, Georges Guillaume Henner, his loved ones showed him unwavering support
and stood by him throughout his career.
Beyond providing material support, they also contributed to his artistic development: it was by painting their portraits that Henner explored—and later perfected—this genre to which he would remain deeply attached. Depicted at various stages of their lives, his family members were not only his first but also his last models. This abundance of portraits attests to the strength of the bonds that united Henner with his family, who served as true pillars of support and a source of inspiration throughout his life.

The portraits of the members [of Jean-Jacques Henner’s family], reproduced twenty times by his devoted hands […] suffice to show the place his mother, his sister Marie-Anne, his brother Grégoire, and above all his brother Séraphin, his wife, and their children always held in his heart. If Henner’s art is the work of his calling, Henner himself is the work of his family. ”
