Galfingue (which Henner calls Galfingen) is a commune located a few kilometers from Bernwiller. Henner undoubtedly visited it on his daily walks. The landscape here is still very sketchy, almost abstract, but the title and the presence of the cross in the center of the work allow us to identify the scene. The cross seen at the foot of the tree is the "Cross of the Spaniard", also called "Spagnol Kruz" by Henner in some of his drawings.
According to the inventory of Henner's paintings compiled by Jules Henner, it was erected on the site where a Spanish prisoner employed on the Rhone to Rhine canal works under Napoleon I was murdered.
