This work was not painted by Henner, but by his friend Carolus-Duran. He painted this portrait in 1891, when Henner was 62 years old. Carolus dedicates this portrait to "his friend" and depicts him in a form of intimacy.
Henner wears his black jacket and beret, the outfit in which he could be found in his studio. In contrast to previous self-portraits, he appears grayer, less valiant, but still with a mischievous air. His Légion d'Honneur still hangs from his collar.
