This work is a typical example of the landscapes that form the background to all Henner's idyllic scenes.
This landscape is not painted en plein air, but in the painter's studio, which schematizes Sundgautian nature in a few recurring elements: a clearing, a pond surrounded by dense forest, a hill in the background and a gap in the blue sky.
From his observations, Henner recreates an idealized, timeless Alsatian landscape, charged with symbolic power, an immutable place where he freezes the image of his intimate Alsace, imbued with a certain melancholy.
