A fascinating subject

In this work, entitled Salomé, Henner depicts the femme fatale par excellence who obtained the head of Saint John the Baptist after performing the dance of the seven veils in front of Herod.

Salomé, biblical figure and femme fatale, has fascinated many artists since the Renaissance like Lucas Cranach, Titian or Caravaggio who often depicted her. Very much in vogue at the end of the 19th century, notably among Symbolists like Gustave Moreau, it also interested Jean-Jacques Henner who, with his inimitable style, capture the essence of this figure, subtly blending biblical history and fin-de-siècle influences in several variants.

A captivating work

Done in 1904, this representation of "Salomé" is a late work in Jean-Jacques Henner's career. It shows the biblical heroine in a unique and captivating interpretation wearing only her tray cleared of the Baptist's head.
This painting is a variant of "Hérodiade", exhibited at the 1887 Salon and now unlocated, making it a rare and precious piece.

The work proposed for acquisition is a late-career version in which the biblical heroine, also dressed in purple, stands to the right. She carries the tray under her arm, without the Baptist's head. The vivid red hue contrasts with the "Hennerian" turquoise blue background, with touches of "ors fauves", in the words of critic Armand Silvestre, shimmering in the hair and dish.
