ELLES
Jean-Jacques Henner students

Until 1897, women had no access to teaching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. This led to the development of private workshops, exclusively reserved for "ladies". In 18XXX, Jean-Jacques Henner, at the request of his friend Carolus Duran, opened "L'Atelier des Dames" where talented artists such as Louise Abbéma, Madeleine Smith, Juana Romani and Ottilie Roederstein, often unjustly forgotten today, were trained.

Displayed throughout the museum, the exhibition focuses on the careers of these women artists embodied by some forty emblematic works, often never seen before.

Thematically and pedagogically, the exhibition explores the issues of apprenticeship, sisterhood and filiation. By penetrating the intimacy of this women's studio, visitors are invited to gain a better understanding of how a woman artist was trained and worked at the end of the 19th century
